DESCRIPTION
Four distinguished German air aces of World War I, and their battles with Allied airmen are profiled in this book. Max Immelmann, the "Eagle of Lille" accounted for 17 British and French aeroplanes, Werner Voss's victories amounted to 48, thirdly the infamous Herman Goring, who gained 22 victories, and finally Lothar Von Richthofen, younger brother of the Red Baron. All four men received Germany's highest award for bravery in action, the famed "Blue Max". In total 124 victories are recorded and analyzed in detail, and there are in-depth personal portraits of the men who were unlucky enough to find themselves under the guns of these deadly German aces.

This book is volume 2 of a series of vital World War One aviation titles by preeminent aero historian Norman Franks and WW1 enthusiast Hal Giblin. Their first title "Under the Guns of the Red Baron" was published by Grub Street in 1995. Under the Guns of the Red Baron: The Complete Record of Von Richthofen's Victories and Victims Fully Illustrated. The authors employed an imaginative, successful, and popular approach to identifying and describing all those airmen who were bested in aerial combat by Manfred von Richthofen. This volume focuses on Max Immelmann, the "Eagle of Lille", Werner Voss, Hermann Goring, and Lothar von Richthofen, the Red Baron's younger brother. All of their victories, totaling 124, are recorded and analyzed in detail. Photographs, maps, and artwork support the authors meticulous research as they "flesh out" the lives and backgrounds of the victims. Hermann Goring's chapter is of particular interest due to anomalies and inconsistencies regarding his victory claims! I highly recommend this book and other works in the series to anyone with a deep interest in World War One aviation. Also available and highly recommended: Under the Guns of the Kaiser's Aces: Bohme, Muller, Von Tutschek, Wolff : The Complete Record of Their Victories and Victims. Grub Street books are of excellent quality!
