This is the story of the JG 26 pilots, or "Abbeville Kids." A microcosm of World War II exists in the rise and fall of this famous fighter wing--whose slashing attacks always seemed to come from the best position--from its founding during Hitler's military buildup, through its glory days in the first years of the war--when its bases in northen France were to be avoided at all costs--right up to the grim, final hours of the Third Reich. From the Paperback edition.

Honestly I think Mr. Caldwell did a great job telling the very exciting history of JG26. I found myself cheering its members on and laughing at some of the more funny/heroic engagements that they had. While i'm no expert on the Luftwaffe, I would be hard pressed to say there is a more well thought out and relate able history of the unit. Now i will say this, it is in my own opinion that Mr. Caldwell subtly highlights one glaring reason the Germans lost WW2. Had Goering and Hitler put more pressure on RAF airbase's instead of switching to bombing cities, there's a good chance the UK wouldn't exist. The only thing i wish Mr. Caldwell had done was speak of what happened to many of the surviving members after the war. I understand that this may not have been possible or outside his original scope; so I give this book 5/5 starts
