A bounty hunter (Eric del Castillo) was very ready to claim the $5000 that the town of "Hot Snake" placed on the head of the psychopath (Carlos East) who'd been terrorizing it. Unfortunately, his prey was in cahoots with a local witch (Monica Miguel)... who'd given him the power to see into the future. Supernatural-tinged sagebrusher from Mexico co-stars Christa Linder. Then, in the Peckinpah-inspired Mexican Western "Guns & Guts," a hired gunman accepts one last job before retiring with his favorite prostitute. Sent to kill a sheriff who's holed up inside an old monastery, he soon winds up in a deadly game of cat and mouse. Jorge Rivero, Pedro Armendáriz, Jr., Rogelio Guerra star. 189 min. Total. In Spanish with English subtitles. Widescreen; Soundtrack: Spanish; Subtitles; English; featurette.
I purchased this unusual double feature from the manufacturer and I wanted to give a nice heads up to Spaghetti Western Amazon fans. Both of these films were made in Mexico in the Seventies and owe a lot to Italian Westerns and Director Sam Peckinpah . First up is Director Fernando Duran Rojas 'HOT SNAKE'- 1976, a missed opportunity for trying to blend the Western with supernatural elements. On the plus side, there are no likeable characters in the film which makes for a great revenge yarn. The downside is that the film moves so slow that it detracts from that motif . Hot Snake refers to the name of the town where the plot unfolds .There is a bruja (witch) added to the proceedings but unfortunately does not get much to do and if the screenwriter would have elaborated on the supernatural touches, it could have emerged as a cult classic. Scenes tend to go on and on in the middle of the films running time which may have audiences either sleeping or scratching their heads. The surprise (?) ending is a long time in coming. Up next is Director Rene Cardona Jr.s 'GUNS AND GUTS'-1974, which is a bit better in the pacing department and has three protagonists teaming up to defeat a wealthy, sleezy sheriff. The film is a nice action time waster which builds to an over the top bloody climax borrowing slightly from director Sam Peckinpah's masterpiece 'THE WILD BUNCH'-1969. Vinegar Syndrome gives both films beautiful 2.35 wide screen transfers in 4K BluRay and the only extra is a fun 15 minute interview with Director Rene Cardona Jr.s son Rene Cardona III who was on the set of 'GUNS AND GUTS" and relates some behind the scenes incidents in the art of Mexican film making. Not for everyone, this package should be of interest to fans of Euro Westerns and may lead to more releases of what I call the Tortilla Western.
